Our History

Delta Delta Delta at UGA historyAlpha Rho

The Alpha Rho chapter of Delta Delta Delta established itself as the sixth national sorority at the University of Georgia on March 2nd and 3rd, 1934. Originally known as the Delta Club, the Alpha Rho chapter was founded by Louise Starr from Charleston, SC. The original members were Lavina Maynard, Dorothy Green, Wilma Cleveland, Elizabeth Thompson, and Anne Smith. After much hard work, the girls participated in their first recruitment and had their first official initiation of 17 new members on February 5, 1935. From this, Alpha Rho has continued to grow into everything it is today, and we anxiously await exciting times to come at the University of Georgia.

Delta Delta Delta History

Delta Delta Delta at UGA historyDelta Delta Delta was founded at Boston University in 1888 by Sarah Ida Shaw and Eleanor Dorcas Pond. Although there were three women's groups at BU at this time, Shaw and Pond saw a need for a group that would be different from the others. They sought to "found a society that shall be kind alike to all and think more of a girl's inner self and character than her personal appearance." These two women proceeded to write Tri Delta's rituals and constitution and designed the emblem. The choosing of the name of the sorority was a joint decision. Pond suggested a triple letter, while Shaw chose the letter and worked on the Greek mottoes and passwords.

By the first anniversary of the founding of Delta Delta Delta, there were three chapters located in three different states, a record for early growth. By 1900, the sorority had grown into 18 collegiate chapters, including the first in the South and the first on the West Coast. Tri Delta became international in 1930 with the installation of a chapter at the University of Toronto. Tri Delta entered the 2010 as one of the largest national sororities with 138 active chapters.

Our Purpose: To establish a perpetual bond of friendship among its members, to develop a stronger and more womanly character, to broaden the moral and intellectual life, and to assist its members in every possible way. It shall also be the purpose of Delta Delta Delta to promote and develop mutually beneficial relationships between the Fraternity and the colleges and universities where the Fraternity has established chapters, to develop qualities of unselfish leadership among its members, and to encourage them to assume, with integrity and devotion to moral and democratic principles, the highest responsibilities of college women.

Our Motto: “Let us steadfastly love one another”
